We can select already display an action by role. It would be very robust to be able to show/hide data on forms by role as well. This would encompass both the label and any fields.
A great example is a New Hire Intake form, capturing the salary amount. There may only be a small group of people who should have access to that data. The way my firm handles this in Metastorm is to have 2 separate forms;
1 for those who can see salary
1 for those who cannot
The maintenance trail becomes longer when you have to manage multiple forms with the same information - not to mention separate forms for read vs. edit. Consequently, if a new field is to be added, it would have to be added in multiple places..
IMO, adding this functionality would be a big win for form design and maintenance.
I normally handle issues such as this by placing checkboxes on the form as calculated fields. The calculation determines if the user is in a certain role or not making it true or false. The fields are then dependent on that checkbox. Hope that helps?
It would be great if visibility for an icon could optionally be set by a calculation rather than needing to set up hidden checkboxes which are calculated values and then setting visibility of the object to depend on the checkbox.
Alternatively (and better still) it would be great if visibility of a field could be toggled from a server side code activity or a visual script based on certain events (form load, data change, etc)
