Separators in Numeric Fields

I would like control over whether or not numbers have separators and what type of separator is used on a per field basis rather than the current, universal setting which turns separators off and on across the entire system.

For example:

Showing a customer the balance of their loan should include all proper separators (1,234,567.89)
Showing them their loan number should not include any separators (654321)

Well, we've been asking for the thousand separtto to be made optional ever since it was introduced. It has no real benefit, and lots of negatives.

If you could even make it empty so it never appears it would be OK, but no, that fails and it uses a comma anyway! *sigh*
