Grid column "Order by value" option

Status: New Idea
by on 03-27-2011 08:58 PM

It would be nice to be able to use one field as the display value ("Business Object Item") and another as an "Order by value", similarly as you already have to hyperlink field types ("Display value", as seen in attached image).

This means we could display descriptive words for something like priority yet the user could still order by the numeric equivalent.

In terms of functionality if there wasn't an overriding "Order by value" entry then it would default to the Business Object Item's value for ordering.

We would use a dropdown field in this case, and the results are exactly what you would wish, I think.

In the attached image, for example, the Priority field is set to a drpdown with the priority as the value, and the name of the number as the name. It orders by the priority number, not the name:

[would do if I could attach an image, anyway]

Thanks Jerome, that worked.

It would be nice not having to run separate queries, create new business object, etc to do this. So I still think it would be a nice enhancement to add, or at least have this listed as a supported feature of grids.

FYI you can attach images, the same way I have in my original post, you just need to have the image hosted somewhere.

Here are the column properties where I have this working

Here is the column ordered by priority, using the "code" identified.

Agreed, it would be nice. In this example I would probably just have a manually created list, as I did in my example which I cannot attach.

I have a suggestion here that asks for the same with the Folder Id column (as we can with URLs). It would be nice to have, say, the Folder Name as the name for a link, instead of something useless and the same for every row.

Re pic, I know, but tinypic has issues with Firefox as far as I can tell (or that I don't allow every script every invented to run in my browser 'cos I don't trust them all). It is too much hassle, and why not allow attachments just like the other areas? Anyway, it's not a big deal.

I agree 100%.  That label should be able to be dynamic somehow.  I don't like the idea of every line being "open" or whatever now that the "row type" of folder is no longer available.  Our next column is the folder name, so every one of our V7 "folder grids" now have to be expanded to add the "open" (or whatever text) value.
