Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

We are building models from the business to the technical.  This means we are linking our programs back to the business flows.  Anyone else doing this?

Re: Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

More and more of our customers are. This includes using the System Interaction Modeler, the Business Class modeler, and all of the Information, Communication and Technology models.

One interesting use is the Workflow modeler. Customers are describing their System-centric business process flows using this model. Then, using Metastorm Integration Manager, they are feeding these models directly into the Metastorm engine to execute these process flows.

For an example, see this case study which includes a video testimonial.

Re: Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

I see several Metastorm customers modeling in the manner that aligns IT with the business.  Gartner and Forrester have been preaching this approach for a few years now.  Strategy driven EA helps organizations align the programs and processes along with the applications that support them and the technologies they use to enterprise strategy.  One of our the approaches we suggest is to profile your enterprise capabilities that enable enterprise goals.  Then define your business, information, technology and solution architectures that will implement your capabilities.

Hi, G,

Do you have any example you can show of what you mean by modeling capabilities, thence the business architecture?

thanks,

Pat

Re: Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

We build a process model for the scope of the project and then drill down to workflow models into data flow models into access models.

I tried to attach a .png as an example but it doesn't appear to work.

Re: Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

It looks like I could only attach a url.  I tried putting in a file path, but it didn't give me what I wanted.  I have a SnagIt image that I want to attach to show what I am talking about.

Kyndra, I think that should just insert the image...  Use the image Icon (tree) and then you can insert your image inline.  Here is my screen shot...

Re: Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

Hi Pat:

ProVision includes a Capability modeler amongst its list of 34 models.  The Capability object is interpreted as a grouping mechanism for the delivery of a product or service.  For example, in order to implement a new capability an organization would need people, process, location, projects, applications, data and technologies etc. All of these enterprise assets can be modeled in various architectures or building blocks such as business, technology information and solution.

All Metastorm customers have free access to Product Packs that can be downloaded from our website.  The information I reference here is in our Enterprise Architecture Management Product Pack.

Regards,

Gerry

Re: Anyone Modeling Technical Components - Programs?

Hi Kyndra,

We create a system decompositon to show the application breakdown and the use the association on the object to link to the application. We then use the layout functionality to be able to visualize the system association on the workflow beside the activity that the application is supporting.

One advantage of doing this is the if we interpret from the system model we see all of the activities that a particular application is supporting. This allows us to look at the impact of potential application changes on the processes that they are supporting.

Regards

John
